It is true that even though faculty depend on us and work with us every day, there is still very little understanding of the role of instructional designer.

Re: To Get the Right Answer, You Have to Ask the Right Question

Evaluating quality of students’ responses in discussion forums in larger courses is always a challenge… In addition to the automated systems mentioned, an instructor could also leverage students already enrolled in the class. Large classes could be split into groups where students lead the discussion and/or take on different roles (e.g., moderator, critic, summarizer). Research indicates that these types of discussions can generate critical and higher order thinking (Baran
& Correia, 2009; Guiller, Durndell, & Ross, 2008). Another option for an instructor is to establish discussion protocols (see previous TeachOnline post on RISE
model by Emily Wray) where students learn to provide meaningful peer-to-peer feedback. In both cases, the instructor role would shift to being more of a facilitator than a content expert.

Re: To Get the Right Answer, You Have to Ask the Right Question

Coursera seems to be working on an automated system for evaluating constructed responses. Not sure how well it evaluates critical thinking skills but it seems pretty accurate when evaluating general responses.

Re: To Get the Right Answer, You Have to Ask the Right Question

This is a nice overview of how to encourage critical thinking. The next step appears to be to develop the capability to take the student answers to these questions and evaluate their quality. We will have something valuable and sustainable when we can do that in large classes.

Re: The Flipped Classroom Series: BYOD Student Response Systems

Thank you for the couple of resources you spoke of.
